After making fun of Lukas Gage’s apartment, Tristram Shapeero apologizes

Thinking to have cut his microphone, the British director had mocked the accommodation of the actor of the series “Euphoria”.

Mea culpa. On Monday, November 23, British director Tristram Shapeero wrote a letter, posted on the Deadline website, to apologize to actor Lukas Gage. In question, his lack of sensitivity and his “unacceptable” remarks.

Since Friday, November 20, a video shared by the comedian of the series “Euphoria” continues to feed on social networks. As the latter prepares to audition in front of the showrunner via screens interposed on Zoom, the young man hears a male voice. Thinking to have cut the microphone, the latter speaks to an unidentified person.

“These poor people who live in these little apartments. When you look at what he has behind him, he has this TV … “, we hear. “I know this is a crappy apartment, that’s why you have to give me this job, so that I have a better one,” Lukas Gage replies, visibly embarrassed.

Although the 25-year-old actor kept revealing the identity of the person who just laughed at his accommodation, Tristram Shapeero’s name came out days later. At 54, he is known for his work on many series such as “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt”, “The Good Place”, “My first times” or even “Brooklyn Nine-Nine”.

“Lukas deserved better”

“Above all, I offer Lukas Gage a sincere and unvarnished apology for my offensive words, my unprofessional behavior during the audition and for not giving him the focus and attention he deserved,” writes the director in his letter. […] Lukas deserved better. ”

He said the hearing in question was held in August, after “four months of confinement” in the United States. “It was very moving to see the actors working so hard to win the few roles available,” he continues. We were deeply touched by the passion of these young people in these extraordinary circumstances. ”

The director does not have the same definition of the word “poor” as the one attributed to him. He would not have used it to pass an economic judgment, but to express a form of sympathy, he assures. “My words were spoken from a place where one really imagined what the actors had to endure, stuck in tight spaces, finding within themselves the means to give a performance which enabled them to win a role in these conditions” , he justified.

While the streak was commented on by many celebrities including Judd Apatow, who supported Lukas Gage, Tristram Shapeero concedes he wants to show more empathy. He promises to become a better collaborator with actors, from the recruitment process to the final cut. Nothing says, however, if the young man landed the role that was at stake.
