José Pedro Balmaceda Pascal, known as Pedro Pascal, is a Chilean-American actor born April 2, 1975 in Santiago (Chile).

He became known for his roles in the Graceland, Game of Thrones and Mentalist series. He is then revealed to the general public with his role in Narcos. He then rose to international fame by playing from 2019 the role of Din Djarin, the main character of the series The Mandalorian which takes place in the Star Wars universe.

Pedro Pascal was born to parents who were part of the opposition movement against Augusto Pinochet in Chile. Shortly after his birth, his family was granted political asylum and moved to California and then to Texas. During his young years, he competed in swimming but preferred the theater when he discovered and fell in love with this discipline. The young man thus studies in this voice in New York where he settles.

Pedro Pascal began appearing in series episodes from the late 1990s before finding his first recurring role in the legal series The Good Wife. He plays the character of Nathan Landry for six episodes. The actor then continues with several more or less important roles on the small screen, as in Lights Out, Brothers & Sisters, Red Widow or even Graceland. He was even chosen in 2013 to step into the shoes of Agent Marcus Pike in the hit series The Mentalist, a character who has a romantic relationship with Lisbon.

But it was in 2014 that the actor exploded in the eyes of the general public, thanks to his role as Oberyn Martell in the fourth season of Game of Thrones. He is a charismatic warrior extremely skilled with arms but who is killed at the end of a titanic battle with The Mountain. With this remarkable performance, the actor then plays DEA agent Javier Peña in the Netflix series Narcos, his first regular character.

At the same time, Pedro Pascal is also called upon in the cinema in physical roles. We find him alongside Matt Damon in The Great Wall and the young Taron Egerton in the Kingsman sequel, Kingsman: The Golden Circle, two blockbusters coming out in 2017.

Youth and training

José Pedro Balmaceda Pascal was born in Santiago and, shortly after his birth, his family, opposing Augusto Pinochet, left Chile after the military coup of September 11, 19731. After being granted political asylum, his family moved to California then Texas to San Antonio. He has lived in New York since 1993 and studied drama at the Tisch School of the Arts.


He began his career with appearances, first under the name Pedro Balmaceda, in television series such as Buffy the Vampire Slayer, New York Police Blues, FBI: Missing and New York, Criminal Section. He then obtained more important roles in the series The Good Wife and Graceland3 and was chosen to play the recurring role of Oberyn Martell in the 4th season of Game of Thrones4.

In early 2014, the CBS network announced that it was joining the cast of Mentalist for at least 5 episodes5. He will play Teresa Lisbon’s boyfriend (played by Robin Tunney).

He also plays in many Broadway and Off-Broadway plays1.

In 2015, he played the role of Javier Peña in Narcos, a DEA agent fighting against the most famous drug trafficker in history, Pablo Escobar.

In 2017, he played the role of Agent Whiskey in the film Kingsman: The Golden Circle by Matthew Vaughn.

At the end of 2019, for the Disney + platform, he played the character of Din Djarin, Mandalorian bounty hunter and hero of Jon Favreau’s The Mandalorian series, thus joining the universe of the Star Wars saga. He also starred in J. C. Chandor’s Triple Frontier for Netflix alongside Oscar Isaac, Ben Affleck and Charlie Hunnam.

In 2020, he plays the billionaire enemy of Wonder Woman Maxwell Lord in the highly anticipated Wonder Woman 1984 by Patty Jenkins, alongside Gal Gadot, Chris Pine and Kristen Wiig. He is also reprising his role as Mandalorian for the second season of the series of the same name. He’s also starring in Robert Rodriguez’s This Is Us, where he reunites with Boyd Holbrook for the first time since the end of the Narcos series.

On February 11, 2021, he was officially chosen to play the protagonist Joel Miller for the HBO series The Last of Us, an adaptation of the original video game.

Private life

In 2014, rumors circulated around a possible couple between Pedro Pascal and Lena Headey, the two having met on the set of Game of Thrones but the actors quickly silenced them by making it clear that they were not that friends.

Pedro Pascal is very close to actor Oscar Isaac with whom he played in several plays and in the movie Triple Frontier. It was Oscar Isaac who pushed him to join the Star Wars universe.

He has a sister who is also an actress in Chile.

French voices

In France, Pedro Pascal does not have a regular French voice. Among the most frequent actors, there are Loïc Houdré7 and Olivier Augrond7 who doubled him respectively four and three times. Stéphane Ronchewski7 and Thierry Wermuth7 have also overtaken him twice each.
