Maria Cornelia Gezina (Mona) Keijzer (Edam, October 9, 1968) is a Dutch politician of the Christian Democratic Appeal (CDA). She has been State Secretary for Economic Affairs and Climate Policy in the Rutte III cabinet since 26 October 2017. She was previously a member of the House of Representatives of the States General (2012-2017).

Biography

Local politics

Keijzer grew up in a Catholic family in Volendam. After completing a study in Dutch law and public administration in Amsterdam, Keijzer became a lawyer in administrative law and mediator. From 1994 to 2005 she was politically active for the CDA from Ilpendam. She was, among other things, a municipal councilor and alderman in the municipality of Waterland. Between 2007 and 2012 she was an alderman in Purmerend, where she had wmo and welfare, care and youth care, sports and recreation in her portfolio.

In the 2010 parliamentary elections, she was on the 67th place on the CDA candidate list. Keijzer contributed to a report on the future course of the CDA, which the CDA Strategic Council published in 2012.

During her aldermanship in Purmerend, Keijzer was chairman of the Administrative Steering Group Matchpoint, the regional referral index for young people at risk of the Amsterdam City Region.

Member of the House of Representatives

In May 2012 she applied for the candidate’s position in the parliamentary elections in September 2012. Her candidacy was supported by former minister Aart Jan de Geus, former CDJA chairman Jeroen van Velzen and former long-track speed skater Yvonne van Gennip. Within a week, according to a poll by Maurice de Hond among 600 CDA voters, her popularity grew from 15 to 30 percent. [1] During the election among the CDA members, Keijzer had to lose out to fellow party member Sybrand Buma, who received more than 50% of the votes in the first round. Keijzer then ended up in second place on the CDA candidate list for the parliamentary elections on September 12 of that year. She received 127,446 preference votes. Keijzer was spokesperson for nursing and home care and culture in the Chamber.

Secretary of State

In the Rutte III Cabinet, Keijzer is State Secretary for Economic Affairs and Climate. As a minister she is responsible for: entrepreneurship (including financing and SMEs), innovation (including space), Top sectors and industrial policy, competition & consumer policy, market regulation, approach to regulatory pressure, digital economy, telecom & internet, ICT, postal market and European structural funds for regional economic support.

On June 23, Keijzer applied for the second time to become party leader on behalf of the CDA for the parliamentary elections of March 17, 2021. On July 11, she obtained 11.1% of the votes, ending up in third place after Hugo de Jonge (48 , 7%) and Pieter Omtzigt (39.7%) and dropped out for the second round. She did, however, express her support for Omtzigt.

Privately

Keijzer is married and has five children.
