Marilyn Manson Biography

Brian Hugh Warner was born January 5, 1969, in Canton, Ohio. Her mother, Barbara Wyer, from a peasant family, was a nurse6, and her father, Hugh Warner [archive] 7, from a middle-class family of German origin who had settled in the United States for several generations, was a helicopter pilot in the United States Army during the Vietnam War, then salesman in a furniture store during Brian’s childhood.

A lonely boy, Brian’s only friend is his cousin Chad10, whom he finds every day after school at his grandmother Beatrice Warner’s, who looks after them until their parents have finished their day at work. Together, they play spies, a profession Brian dreams of doing. The person they prefer to watch is their retired truck grandfather Jack. Jack often goes down to the cellar to run a little electric train [ref. desired]. In the course of their “investigations”, Brian and Chad discover that the cellar is not what they imagined. Their grandfather keeps a whole collection of pornographic magazines, old sex toys, female underwear, wigs and even zoophile photos. This grandfather died of cancer in 1995.

As a child, Brian attended Heritage Christian School [ref. desired], a private Episcopalian establishment governed by very strict rules12: long hair is not tolerated in boys and the color of clothing is imposed according to the day of the week. One day, Brian brought to class a photo that his maternal grandmother took from an airplane window, which she said showed an angel in the sky. His teacher cries out blasphemy [ref. necessary]. Disappointed, Brian categorically decides that this school will not be able to bring him anything good and he persists in being fired [ref. desired]. He unsuccessfully multiplies the breaches of the rules (theft, contraband, introduction into the school of prohibited objects, among others). Brian’s teachers have a deep loathing for rock culture, and it is out of rebellion that he takes an interest in it. The school organizes seminars during which they frighten children with legends on Pop music groups [ref. necessary]. Brian becomes an unconditional fan of AC / DC, of Judas Priest, and especially of the group Kiss. Indeed – when he was only ten years old (in 1979) – his father brought him to one of their concerts and their sense of direction strongly impressed the young Brian [ref. necessary].

After college, Brian returns to a public high school [ref. necessary]. Sick, often absent, he has difficulty integrating. During his second year (around seventeen), he developed a serious allergy to antibiotics which nearly killed him [ref. necessary]. He is hospitalized and Jennifer, a girl in his class, visits him regularly, she becomes his first girlfriend [ref. necessary]. In high school, he sympathizes with John Crowell, an uninhibited boy who shares his passion for rock and who offers him his first joint of marijuana.

At eighteen, he moved with his family to Fort Lauderdale13, Florida, where his father found a job as a salesperson in a carpet store. Brian then enrolled at Broward Community College to study journalism and theater. In his free time, he writes poems and short stories that he tries to get published – without success – in magazines [ref. necessary]. At the same time, he works at night for a chain of record stores, the Spec’s Local [ref. necessary]. With the help of two employees, he steals several records from the manager’s back. After being fired, he worked for a time as a music critic for Tonight Today, a free newspaper. Receiving no salary from his boss, he was hired as a journalist for the 25th Parallel16,15, a brand new magazine, exaggerating his CV a bit (he was not a graduate at the time and had almost no experience) to interview the big names in music15 (Malcolm McLaren, Debbie Harry, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Trent Reznor…) to whom he then confided his desire to be one of them.

With guitarist Scott Putesky, they formed Marilyn Manson and the Spooky Kids following several conversations at the Reunion Room in Fort Lauderdale (Florida) in 198917. The name was subsequently shortened to Marilyn Manson. Along with Spooky Kids, Marilyn Manson and Jeordie White – also known as Twiggy Ramirez – get involved with Stephen Gregory Bier Jr. (also known as Madonna Wayne Gacy) in two side projects: Satan on Fire18, a group of Fictional Christian heavy metal in which he plays bass guitar and drums, as well as Mrs. Scabtree19, a collaborative group formed with White and Jessicka (singer of the band Jack Off Jill20). In 1993, the group caught the attention of Trent Reznor. Reznor produced their first album in 1994, Portrait of an American Family21, and was released by Nothing Records. The group became popular and even participated in the Self Destruct Tour, which resulted in the album The Downward Spiral alongside Nine Inch Nails and Jim Rose Circus, in parallel with the release of Smells Like Children in 1995. This EP contains one of their hits broadcast on MTV, Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This), 1983 cover of Eurythmics (co-produced by Trent Reznor) 22.

In the United States alone, the group’s three albums are certified double-platinum, and three other gold records; the group, meanwhile, reached the top ten seven times. Marilyn Manson initially worked as a producer for the group Jack Off Jill. He helped with the recording of their first compositions, played guitar on the song My Cat and made the group participate in numerous concerts in South Florida. Marilyn Manson then wrote the album Humid Teenage Mediocrity 1992-1995, bringing together the first compositions of Jack Off Jill. Marilyn Manson appears as a guest on DMX24’s Flesh of My Flesh, Blood of My Blood, on Godhead’s 2000 Years of Human Error album – the only one released by Posthuman25,26. In 2011, Manson revealed that he had participated in the song Can’t Haunt Me featured on Skylar Grey’s album Invinsible27.

Besides music, Marilyn Manson is also a painter, with a preference for watercolors. He opened his own art gallery, The Celebritarian Corporation Gallery of Fine Art, in Los Angeles, October 31, 2006, Halloween day [ref. necessary]. He is also a great lover of absinthe, from which he has developed his own recipe called “la Mansinthe” 29, whose alcohol content is 66.6%, with reference to the number of the beast in the Apocalypse of the apostle John. Marilyn Manson is chosen by artistic director and photographer Hedi Slimane to represent the prestigious French luxury house Saint Laurent; he is the face of the Spring-Summer 2014 ready-to-wear collection.

On February 1, 2021, Evan Rachel Wood accuses Brian Hugh Warner of sexual assault and rape on Instagram. She writes: “My executioner’s name is Brian Warner, known the world over as Marilyn Manson. He started out winning my trust when I was a teenager and abused me horribly for years. He brainwashed me and manipulated me into submission. I refuse to continue living in fear of reprisals, defamation or blackmail. I am here to reveal the nature of this dangerous man and to expose the many industries that keep him going, before he ruins more lives. I stand with the many other victims who will no longer remain silent. “. After Evan Rachel Wood’s message, four other women accuse him in turn of “sexual assault, psychological abuse or various forms of coercion, violence and intimidation” according to Vanity Fair44,45,46 .
