The family may have lived in places such as New Jersey, Texas, New York and even in another country like Japan12. Christina Aguilera and her mother have repeatedly stated that Fausto Aguilera was physically and emotionally violent, which the latter has always denied, even stating “I was never violent towards her or her mother. And they know it. “. After several years of estrangement, Christina expressed in 2012 her desire to reconcile with her father13. Christina Aguilera has very often used music as a form of escape from her home, considered turbulent and wobbly14. After her parents divorced when she was six, 10 Christina, her younger sister Rachel (born July 6, 1986) and her mother (who later remarried Jim Kearns and gave birth to another child, Michael ‘Mikey’ Kearns) move into his grandmother’s10 home in Pittsburgh, a suburb of Rochester, Pennsylvania. Following her mother’s marriage to Jim Kearns, Christina has a half-sister and half-brother, Stephanie and Casey, from Jim’s first marriage.

Throughout her youth in Pittsburgh, Christina would sing the U.S. National Anthem The Star-Spangled Banner several times before games between the Pittsburgh Penguins, Pittsburgh Steelers and Pittsburgh Pirates baseball games, in addition to the finals of the 1992 Stanley Cup17.

She attended the Rochester Area School District in Rochester and Marshall Middle School near Wexford. She also briefly attended North Allegheny Intermediate High School before going to school from home due to bullying she experienced from fellow students. In 1991, she auditioned for a position at the Mickey Mouse Club, although she was not of the legal age required by Disney. She joined the TV show two years later. She performed musical numbers and comedy sketches until its cancellation in 199419. Her co-stars were Ryan Gosling, Keri Russell, Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake1. After the show ended, she traveled overseas to enrich her vocal talents.

From Christina Aguilera to My Kind of Christmas (1999-2001)

After recording Reflection, Christina Aguilera caught the attention of RCA Records, A&R Ron Fair and signed with the label23. RCA very quickly began to present tracks to Christina to record and create the foundation for her first album. Originally intended to create the artist’s early years as “the debut of a huge singer” like Barbra Streisand, RCA eventually had to change plans quickly following the arrival of the pop-teen wave involving the unexpected success of Britney Spears. . The record company rushes the production process for a teenage pop theme24. They decided that the album’s first single would be Genie in a Bottle, a trendy pop and R&B track, and was released in June 1999.25 The single was a major commercial success, reaching No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the United States26 and setting records in 20 other countries27. In the end, the track sold over 7 million copies, becoming one of the best-selling singles worldwide25.

Following the success of the single, the self-titled debut album Christina Aguilera was released in August 1999 and became a commercial success, peaking at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and being certified eight times platinum by the RIAA28. In France, the album will be ranked 44th best-selling album for one week in 200029. It has sold 14 million copies worldwide and three other singles will be extracted, including two number one on the Billboard Hot 100; What a Girl Wants and Come On Over Baby (All I want is You) and a cover of the group All-4-One I Turn to You21. The song from the movie Mulan “Reflection” is also part of the list of songs featured on this album. This opus allows Christina Aguilera to win the Grammy Award for Best New Artist at the ceremony in 200030.

The singer’s next two albums, Mi Reflejo and My Kind of Christmas, were released at the end of 2000. The first topped the Billboard Top Latin for nineteen consecutive weeks31 and was certified six times platinum in the “Latin” section of the RIAA32. Aguilera’s take on Kurtz’s influence when it comes to his creative direction, role as exclusive personal manager, and the overload of work leads the singer to seek legal means and terminates her contract. In October 2000, Aguilera filed a breach of fiduciary duty lawsuit against Kurtz for improper, undue and improper influence over his business activities, as well as for fraud. After terminating Kurtz’s services, Irving Azoff was hired as his new manager38. The first action of Christina on the artistic control of her career is expressed in 2001 for the song of the film Moulin Rouge !, Lady Marmalade (cover of the classic by Pattie LaBelle), with the presence of P! Nk, Mya and Lil ‘Kim . Initially refused by RCA executives because “too urban” and “too Rockwilder and Missy”, Christina insisted on recording the song all the same37. Lady Marmalade ranked number one on the Billboard Hot 100 for five weeks based on radio broadcasts alone, becoming the first track in history to stay at # 1 on the charts for more than a week. The song received a Grammy Award for Best Pop Voice Collaboration in 200241.

While planning for her fourth studio album, Christina Aguilera is moving towards a new artistic direction which she believes has more musical and lyrical depth42. She names the album Stripped which was released on October 29, 2002 and explains that the title represents “a new beginning, a reintroduction of herself as a new artist, in a certain sense” 43.

For this album, she is the executive producer herself and co-writes most of the songs (with various collaborations including Linda Perry or Scott Storch) 44. The first single from the album is Dirrty with rapper Redman, chosen by the singer to shed her pop image and to express her sexuality and aggressiveness. The music video for the song, directed by David LaChapelle is controversial because it depicts a too sexual universe. The new image of Christina featured in the clip begins to eclipse her music, generating widespread criticism from her peers, including Shakira and Jessica Simpson in addition to the general public.

Christina Aguilera nevertheless defends her new image, explaining that she is “in a position of power, in absolute control of everything and everyone around her, which is also what shows that one is a true artist” 46 .

The final version of “Stripped” integrates various musical genres such as R&B, pop, rock, Latin and has self-esteem as its main theme, while emphasizing gender equality and more generally sexuality44 .

Jancee Dunn of Rolling Stone magazine praises Christina Aguilera’s vocal abilities in her review but finds the album lacking in “musical focus.” 47 The album was nonetheless a commercial success, peaking at No. 2 on Billboard’s Top 200 and sold more than 4.3 million copies in the United States48.

The album became a major hit in the UK, after selling 2 million copies and became the second best-selling album by an American artist of the 2000s, behind Norah Jones with Come Away With Me49. Stripped sells more than 12 million copies worldwide, including 150,000 copies in France50.

4 singles will be taken from the album following Dirrty: Beautiful, Fighter, Can’t Hold Us Down with Lil ‘Kim, and The Voice Within. Beautiful achieved universal recognition for the positive portrayal of the LGBT community and became the album’s best-selling single, peaking at No. 2 on Billboard Hot 10051. The track will also be ranked No. 1 in Europe and Australia. It earned the singer a Grammy Award for Best Female Vocal Performance at the 2004 awards ceremony. 52 The song was later ranked number 52 among the Top 100 Songs of the 2000s by Rolling Stone magazine in 2011.53
